Data Clean was founded in 1979 by Philip Bertino. Mr. Bertino worked in the computer centre of a major New York bank. One of his roles was to arrange and give tours of the computer centre to customers and investors of the bank. It is important to note that in the 1970s computers were not as widespread as today and their size and capabilities were daunting – making the data centre tour one of the highlights for bank visitors. However, because of the need for constant maintenance of the computer equipment, the computers and their environment always looked unclean.
A dirty computer room was not the impression this major New York bank wanted to present to clients and investors. When Mr Bertino approached IBM to clean the equipment, they responded that the warranty only covers broken equipment and not dirty computers. Exercising his only other option, Mr. Bertino asked the building janitorial team to clean the computer centre. This unfortunately ended in disaster. The untrained janitors spilled cleaning solutions into the equipment, used too much water on the floor
and managed to un-plug some vital equipment.
From this experience, Mr. Bertino realised an opportunity existed to perform specialised cleaning services for his and other computer centres across New York.
From this beginning Data Clean was created and has a client list in the tens of thousands and has offices servicing all of the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
From his own experience, Mr. Bertino realized there existed an opportunity to perform specialised cleaning services for his and other data centres. The rest, as they say, is history.
Today, Data Clean can boast a customer base in the tens of thousands and an international presence with service centres in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
